All seeds playing on the second day of the Lyon Open on Tuesday advanced to the next round. Third seed Caroline Garcia came through in a derby with fellow Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Garcia will play the winner between Belarus’ Vera Lapko and Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic in the round-of-16.
Another Frenchwoman, fourth seed Kristina Mladenovic also took her place in the pre-quarter-finals. Mladenovic was in a spot of bother in her opener against Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu but recovered to claim a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win in two hours and 42 minutes.
Mladenovic will play Russian qualifier Margarita Gasparyan next. Gasparyan defeated Ukraine’s Katarina Zavatska 6-4, 6-1 in their first-round match.
Lyon Open: Stefanie Voegele wins a marathon
Seventh seed Paula Badosa of Spain also needed three sets to reach the second round.
Badosa defeated French wildcard Harmony Tan 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(7) in two hours and 19 minutes. Badosa’s opponent in the round-of-16 is Switzerland’s, Stefanie Voegele. Voegele’s first-round match against Romanian Irina Bara was a roller-coaster that was short of the three-hour mark by merely seven minutes.
When the match ended, the final score in favour of Voegele read 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 6-3. During the match, it was Bara who had the lead in the match across the first two sets but Voegele made the turnaround on both occasions. Voegele brushed past Bara in the opening set tie-break and in the second set tie-break, went up 5-2 on the Romanian.
A resurgence from Bara ensured that she stayed in the match to take it to the decider. In the final set, Voegele imposed herself taking the win without any further fuss. Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Canadian wildcard Eugenie Bouchard in their first-round clash.
The Belarusian will face a Frenchwoman next, in either fifth seed Alize Cornet or wildcard Clara Burel. Earlier to start the day’s play at the Lyon Open, Czech Tereza Martincova defeated fellow qualifier, Italian Giulia Gatto-Monticone 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the second round. Martincova will play Fiona Ferro next.
