Exciting matches had been lined up for the pre-quarter-finals at the Qatar Total Open and these totally lived up to the hype. On Wednesday, all seeds won their respective round-of-16 matches to advance to the last-eight in Doha.
Garbine Muguruza stunned Aryna Sabalenka – the defending champion – in their round-of-16 match. The Spaniard, who is unseeded in the event, came through 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes against the third seed.
After her win, Muguruza said, “I'm very motivated to play top players. Like everybody, I worked hard. I'm fighting for trophies, to play well in big tournaments, in good tournaments. Today I was facing a top player, and I knew I have to go out there with a big, fighting spirit, and (be) strong to be able to win against these tough opponents”.
Muguruza will take on Maria Sakkari in the quarter-final. The Greek won 6-2, 6-2 against Madison Keys.
Qatar Total Open: Elina Svitolina wins
Top-seed Elina Svitolina, meanwhile, set up a quarter-final clash against, eighth seed Victoria Azarenka.
Svitolina moved past Misaki Doi with east, 6-1, 6-2. Two-time former champion Azarenka, on the other hand, came from a break down in the opening set to prop up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Laura Siegemund. In the bottom half, Anett Kontaveit booked a quarter-final berth against fourth seed Petra Kvitova.
The Estonian got past former titlist Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-4. Kvitova also notched a straight-sets 6-1, 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in their second-round match. The last quarter-final at the Qatar Total Open will be played between Jessica Pegula and second seed Karolina Pliskova.
The American, who qualified for the main draw, ousted Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 7-5 in their second-round clash. Pliskova won the only other three-setter of the day against Ons Jabeur, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
