St. Petersburg Open: Jelena Ostapenko powers into second round

Sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the second round of the St. Petersburg Open on Monday with a straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2 win over Paula Badosa. The Latvian needed just 55 minutes to wrap up the win. Ostapenko hit 26 winners and had merely eight unforced errors to her name even as Badosa struggled to find her game at the other end.

Also, while Ostapenko converted four break points off Badosa’s serve she didn’t face a single break point on her own service games. Post-match, the 2017 French Open champion spoke about having Marion Bartoli coaching her again following a brief break for the birth of her child.

Everybody knows that she has a baby now. It was tough for her to travel the first couple of months but I was always in touch with her, texting and talking. So, she was helping me in Dubai and she's going to help me in a couple more tournaments.

Maybe not Miami, but after on clay courts”. In the second round, Ostapenko could face either Romanian qualifier Jaqueline Cristian or Belarusian Vera Lapko.

In another Romanian-Belarusian first-round clash, Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Ana Bogdan.

Sasnovich needed three sets and an hour and 50 minutes to claim the comeback victory, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the opening set, both players two service breaks each before Bogdan steered the set her way by capturing two more breaks on Sasnovich’s serve.

While the Belarusian didn’t face a single break point in the second set, she was broken once but replied by breaking Bogdan’s serve four times to put herself into the second round. In the second round, Sasnovich could either play eighth seed Daria Kasatkina or Lyon Open champion, Danish qualifier Clara Tauson.

Vera Zvonareva was the final winner at the St. Petersburg Open on Monday. The Russian, who received a main draw wildcard, defeated Australian qualifier Arina Rodionova 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 22 minutes.
