Miami Open: Bianca Andreescu claims win in late-night thriller; Osaka moves into QF

Top-seed Ashleigh Barty was the first player to advance to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on Monday. The Australian defeated 14th seed Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 in an hour and 52 minutes. At the start of the match, Barty imposed herself on her opponent.

The match changed course when Azarenka returned the favour in the second set. The third set saw both players exchange breaks before settling into the proceedings. As the set progressed, Barty eased into the momentum once again as she won the last four games in a row to reach the last-eight.

In the quarter-finals, the defending champion will play seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian took just 67 minutes to pip 19th seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-2. The second quarter-final in the top half in Miami will be played between Anastasija Sevastova and fifth seed Elina Svitolina.

Sevastova ended the run of Ana Konjuh 6-1, 7-5. In her fourth-round match, the Ukrainian got the better of the ninth seed Petra Kvitova, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Miami Open: Garbine Muguruza crashes out

In the bottom half, eighth seed Bianca Andreescu outlasted 12th seed Garbine Muguruza to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Canadian came from a set down to beat the Spaniard 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 11 minutes. In her post-match media conference, Andreescu said, “It was really tough. She started out playing really, really well. I don't think I was at the level I wanted to be right at the start of the match, because I knew she was going to come out really, really strong, and that's what she did.

But I had to re-adapt, which I did in the second set. I regrouped. I kept fighting. I changed my game plan a little bit as well. And it worked”. In the quarter-finals, Andreescu will play Muguruza’s compatriot, Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Sorribes Tormo upset the 27th seed Ons Jabeur 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in their round-of-16 clash. The last quarter-final of the Miami Open will be played between 23rd seed Maria Sakkari and second seed Naomi Osaka. Sakkari saved six match points before stopping Jessica Pegula on her tracks, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6).

Osaka, meanwhile, defeated 16th seed Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-3. This will be the Japanese’s maiden appearance in the last-eight in Miami.
