Charleston Open: Danka Kovinic ousts Petra Kvitova, Ashleigh Barty reaches QF

Top seed Ashleigh Barty faced an uphill battle against Shelby Rogers before posting a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 win in two hours and 23 minutes. This was Barty’s eighth consecutive match win going back to her Miami Open title run.

After the match, Barty spoke highly of her opponent. She said, “Shelby’s an exceptional ball-striker, she always makes you work very hard for every single point, every single match, and tonight was no different.

It’s strange playing someone so often, kind of quite close together. Sometimes it’s the way the draw works, you find yourself playing the same person over and over, and other times you won’t play them for years at a time”.

In the quarter-finals, Barty will play Paula Badosa. The Spaniard defeated Cathy McNally 6-3, 6-3 in their pre-quarterfinal match. The other quarter-final in the top half of the draw will be played between Veronika Kudermetova and Sloane Stephens.

The 15th seed from Russia defeated Kurumi Nara 6-0, 6-3 in an hour and 11 minutes. The American, meanwhile, got the better of Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-4 in their third-round meeting.

Charleston Open: Coco Gauff reaches last-eight

In the bottom half, sixth seed Garbine Muguruza retired in her third-round match against 11th seed Yulia Putintseva with an injury to her left thigh.

Muguruza was leading 6-0, 2-2 at the time of her retirement. Post-match, talking about her decision to stop playing, the Spaniard said, “I was already feeling some pain in my first match. The switch of hard courts to clay was tough, and in a very short amount of time.

I started very well, and all of a sudden, I felt a sharp pain in my leg, and it got worse. I didn't want to continue without playing my best tennis. It didn't make sense to me. Putintseva will play Danka Kovinic who caused the biggest upset of the tournament this far in taking out the third seed Petra Kvitova.

The Montenegrin won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. The last quarter-final at the Charleston Open will be played between 12th seed Ons Jabeur and 14th seed Coco Gauff. Jabeur defeated Alize Cornet 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 while Gauff moved past Davis 6-2, 7-6(2). Photo Credit: Volvo Car Open
