Copa Colsanitas: Maria Camila Osorio Serrano keeps Colombian hopes alive

Tamara Zidansek, seeded fifth at the Copa Colsanitas, avoided the fate that befell other seeds in the draw. The Slovenian defeated Giulia Gatto-Monticone to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday. Zidansek, the only top-100 player left in the tournament won 6-2, 6-3 in 71 minutes.

She saved nine of the 11 break points she faced while converting six of the eight break point opportunities she had on the Italian’s serve. Zidansek’s quarter-final opponent will be another Italian, Sara Errani.

Errani had made it through to the last-eight on Wednesday.

Copa Colsanitas: Harmony Tan makes history

France’s Harmony Tan defeated Chile’s Daniela Seguel, who had received a wildcard into the main draw, to reach the quarters in the Colombian capital.

Tan needed two hours and six minutes to wrap up a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory. The match featured nine breaks of serve, with Tan converting five of the 18 opportunities she had on Seguel’s serve and saving five of the nine break points on her own serve.

This is the first time in her career that the world no. 190 has reached the last-eight of a WTA tournament. For a place in the semi-finals, she will play Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena, a former champion here in 2012. Colombia’s Maria Camila Osorio Serrano kept the host country’s banner waving as she claimed the last quarter-final spot at the Copa Colsanitas.

In her third-round clash against seventh-seeded Czech Tereza Martincova, the 19-year-old won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 37 minutes. This is the second time that Osorio Serrano has reached this far at the tournament, with her first quarter-final appearance coming in 2019.

Back then, she lost to eventual champion, Amanda Anisimova. In her post-match interview, as quoted by the Copa Colsanitas website, Osorio Serrano said, “I played with variety, I changed her rhythm. Martincova reached a point where she despaired and began to fail more than normal, I was able to keep myself physically and mentally very well, and I was able to ensure victory. It is a triumph that gives me a lot of confidence, and I feel that I am on par with the Top-100 players”.
