Istanbul Open: Daria Kasatkina wins opener; Fiona Ferro ousts 2nd seed

Fiona Ferro posted the sole upset of the day, over second seed Petra Martic at the Istanbul Open on Tuesday. The Frenchwoman won in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. In the second round, Ferro will play Vera Zvonareva.

The Russian who received a main draw wildcard beat Polona Hercog in their first-round clash 6-3, 6-3. Top-seed Elise Mertens advanced to the second round without any fuss against Lara Arruabarrena. Mertens won 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 29 minutes.

In the next round, the Belgian will play Viktorija Golubic. Third seed Veronika Kudermetova took her place in the second round as well. The Russian won against Bernarda Pera 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) after three hours of play. In the next round, Kudermetova will clash against either Zarina Diyas or Kaia Kanepi.

Kudermetova’s compatriot, fourth-seeded Daria Kasatkina also moved ahead in the draw. Kasatkina wrapped up a 6-1, 6-0 opening-round victory over Croatian qualifier Tereza Mrdeza in just 65 minutes. In the round-of-16, Kasatkina will play Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk came through her opener against Russian qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 6-3.

Istanbul Open: Sorana Cirstea makes it to second round

Fifth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova ousted home favourite, wildcard Cagla Buyukakcay in the opening round 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-0. In the second round, the Czech will play Ana Bogdan.

Bogdan defeated Nao Hibino 6-3, 6-3 in their opener. Sorana Cirstea defeated Kateryna Kozlova in the first round to take her place in the round-of-16. The Romanian won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (6), a minute shy of the two-hour mark.

In the next round, Cirstea will play Anastasia Potapova. Potapova had earlier upset her compatriot, sixth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in their opener. Kristina Mladenovic also made it through to the second round at the Istanbul Open.

The Frenchwoman played lucky loser Barbara Haas in her opener after her initially-drawn opponent, seventh seed Saisai Zheng withdrew from the tournament. Mladenovic won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes. For a place in the quarter-finals, Mladenovic will play Katerina Siniakova.
