Emilia-Romagna Open: Coco Gauff & Qiang Wang to open rivalry for 1st time in final

Coco Gauff and Qiang Wang will play each other for the title at the Emilia-Romagna Open on Saturday. Earlier, the third-seeded Gauff defeated Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in two hours and eight minutes. It was the first time this week that the teenager had lost a set.

This is Gauff’s second career final. Previously, she reached the final of the 2020 Linz Open. Gauff also won the Linz Open title and will be looking to make it two wins out of two finals contested, here in Parma. “It definitely gives me more experience, just the fact that I’ve been in a final before, so I know how the nerves feel, and I know how to handle it a little bit better.

Tomorrow, I’m just going to go out there and have fun,” Gauff shared in her post-match press conference. The 17-year-old also talked about playing Siniakova, against whom she now has a 2-0 win-to-loss record after this latest result.

“[Siniakova is] a super tricky player, she obviously had some great wins this week. To be honest, I just kind of hung in there, and although in the second set my level went down a little bit, I was glad that I was able to pick it up for the third,” she said.

Emilia-Romagna Open: Coco Gauff soars high; Qiang Wang undeterred

Following her successful week in Parma, Gauff will reach a new career-high in the WTA ranking on Monday. If she loses in the final, she will be ranked 26th but if she wins the title, she will be ranked 25th.

Against the sixth-seeded Wang, Gauff will have her work cut out for her. The world no. 48 got through in her semi-final against Sloane Stephens with a 6-2, 7-6(3) win in an hour and 46 minutes. The second set was quite a roller coaster as Stephens first gained the upper hand to go up 5-1 and even had three set points to level the match.

However, Wang fought back to eventually take the win in straight sets. Their final at the Emilia-Romagna Open will be the first time that Coco Gauff and Qiang Wang will be playing each other.
