French Open: Barbora Krejcikova gets past Coco Gauff to reach maiden Major SF

Barbora Krejcikova ousted the 24th seed Coco Gauff in the quarter-final of the French Open. The Czech won 7-6(6), 6-3 in an hour and 50 minutes. Gauff quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set as Krejcikova looked like she was starting slowly on the other side of the net.

However, it didn’t take long for the world no. 38 to get the break back and bring the set back to parity. Gauff once again took the lead following a second break of serve in the eighth game of the set. In the ninth game, while trying to serve for the set, Gauff had the first of three set points but an unforced error put paid to her chances.

A couple of unforced errors later, Gauff surrendered the break back to Krejcikova. In the tie-break, it was the American who once again charged first and had two more set points but two winners by Krejcikova erased both. Krejcikova then had her first set point at 7-6 in the tie-break that she converted with a winner to go up in the match.

French Open: Barbora Krejcikova's winning streak continues

The second set saw a complete transformation of attitude in both players. Gauff’s mental energy looked to have depleted entirely in the second set and her shots turned erroneous.

On the other side, Krejcikova’s confidence looked to have been boosted after her opening-set heroics. Krejcikova built a 4-0 double-break lead in no time and at 5-1 had three match points to complete the win. However, Gauff wasn’t done and unafraid ball-hitting from her coupled with Krejcikova’s tightness allowed the American to break her.

Gauff’s service game that followed brought up two more match points for Krejcikova but she wasn’t able to convert on either of those. Finally, Krejcikova got the job done when serving for the match in the ninth game of the set, on her sixth match point.

Both players were almost on par in terms of the winners – Gauff hit 25 winners to Krejcikova’s 27. However, Gauff hit 41 unforced errors to Krejcikova’s 28 which made the biggest difference towards the end.

Barbora Krejcikova, who will play either Maria Sakkari or Iga Swiatek in the French Open semi-final, will be making her debut in the penultimate round of a Slam.
