Donna Vekic reached the second round of the Viking Classic in Birmingham on Monday. The third-seeded Croat defeated British wildcard Francesca Jones 6-1, 6-3 in 67 minutes. Vekic broke Jones’ serve five times and saved three of the four break points she faced in the match.
Next up for Vekic is Camila Giorgi. Giorgi won her first-round Italian derby against qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone 6-3, 6-0 in 69 minutes. The Italian lost her serve once in the match but broke her compatriot’s serve five times.
Vekic and the 76th-ranked Giorgi have played twice previously with the former leading their head-to-head 2-0. The only other seeded player to play her opening-round match on Monday was the eighth-seeded Marie Bouzkova. The Czech needed three sets and a little over two hours to move past Su-Wei Hsieh, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Hsieh was broken five times in the match while Bouzkova lost serve only twice, in the opening set. Across the latter two sets, Bouzkova saved all five break points she faced. In the second round, Bouzkova will play Caroline Garcia.
The Frenchwoman got the better of Briton, wildcard Harriet Dart in another three-set battle. Garcia needed two hours and 29 minutes to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Viking Classic: Tereza Martincova advances
Following the exits of Jones and Dart, Heather Watson is the only home player left in the draw.
Watson won her first-round match against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. Golubic won the opening set but Watson was too good in the second and third sets which helped her post a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win after two hours of play. Watson will play either sixth seed Shuai Zhang or Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko next.
Tereza Martincova, who qualified into the main draw, defeated Australian wildcard Samantha Stosur in their first-round clash. The Czech won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 13 minutes. In the second round, Martincova will play Lauren Davis or fifth seed Jelena Ostapenko.
American Coco Vandeweghe also reached the second round at the Viking Classic on Monday. Vandeweghe won 6-4, 7-6(1) against Kristyna Pliskova.
