Veronika Kudermetova upset eighth seed Karolina Muchova in the first round of the Bett1 Open on Tuesday. The Russian needed two hours and 27 minutes to defeat the Czech 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2. Kudermetova hit 50 winners to Muchova’s 25 en route to victory.
Speaking with the press after her win, Kudermetova said that she wasn’t keen on letting what’d happened at the French Open in her first-round match against Katerina Siniakova repeat. Back then, Kudermetova had had two match points in the third set but failed to capitalise and had ended up losing.
“I don't know how to explain it but at the French Open, I lost a very close match. I was 5-1 up, 5-2 up in both sets and I lost. Today I was a little bit thinking about it when I was up and serving. Mentally, it's not really easy because I think and think about my serve.
But I am really happy I stayed in the match in the third set,” she said. In the second round, Kudermetova will play countrywoman, Liudmila Samsonova. Samsonova, who qualified into the main draw, ousted Muchova’s compatriot Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 7-6(6) in an hour and 41 minutes.
Bett1 Open: Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka to renew rivalry
Jessica Pegula advanced to the second round after her first-round opponent, Hailey Baptiste withdrew in their match after having suffered a fall and injuring herself.
Pegula’s second-round opponent is fourth seed Karolina Pliskova. Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka will clash for a place in the quarter-finals. The German won 6-2, 6-1 against Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi in the first round.
The seventh-seeded Belarusian, on the other hand, had a tough opener against Andrea Petkovic. She eventually prevailed 6-4, 7-6(2). Sixth seed Garbine Muguruza also began her Berlin campaign on a winning note. The Spaniard defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-3 in 79 minutes.
In the second round, Muguruza will play Elena Rybakina who overcame Shelby Rogers 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Petra Martic will play fifth seed Belinda Bencic in the round-of-16 at the Bett1 Open. The Croatian defeated Asia Muhammad 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 to complete the first-round action in Berlin.
