Prague Open: Barbora Krejcikova leads Czech contingent's march into 2R

Barbora Krejcikova advanced to the second round of the Prague Open on Tuesday. The second seed needed just 67 minutes to wrap up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bulgaria’s Isabelle Shinikova. The 2021 French Open champion won 75% of her first-serve points to Shinikova winning 48% of her first-serve points.

Krejcikova was unable to save the sole break point she faced but converted five of the seven break points she had on Shinikova’s serve. In the second round, the world no. 17 will play Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure. Bonaventure defeated British qualifier Nikita Bains 6-3, 6-2 in 70 minutes.

Krejcikova’s doubles partner and fellow Czech, Katerina Siniakova also came through the first round. Siniakova, seeded fifth in the Czech capital, defeated qualifier Jodie Burrage of Great Britain 6-0, 6-4 in 68 minutes.

Siniakova converted six of the 11 break points she had while saving one of the three break points, she faced. In the second round, she’ll play countrywoman Tereza Smitkova, who’d previously won her opening-round match.

Eighth seed Tereza Martincova also joined her compatriots Krejcikova and Siniakova in the second round. Martincova won her opener against Britain’s Samantha Murray Sharan 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 11 minutes.

Martincova made good of five of the 11 break points that came her way while losing her serve twice in the course of the match. Next up for the Czech is qualifier Asia Muhammad of the United States. Fourth-seeded Czech Marie Bouzkova, however, didn’t fare all too well in her opening-round match against Australian Storm Sanders.

Sanders came from a set down to beat Bouzkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 17 minutes. Sanders will next play Nuria Parrizas Dias. The Spaniard defeated Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in their first-round clash.

Xinyu Wang and En-Shuo Liang will play for a place in the last eight at the Prague Open. Wang defeated Switzerland’s Leonie Kung 6-2, 6-2 in their first-round clash. Liang, meanwhile, defeated Kung’s compatriot and fellow lucky loser Conny Perrin 6-3, 6-4 in their opener.
