Andrey Rublev: I took advantage of Rafael Nadal not playing much in 2021

Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev admitted that Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem being sidelined for a good part of the year helped him enter the top-5. Rublev, 23, is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 5 in the world.

Nadal has played only one tournament since the French Open, while AustrianThiem suffered a season-ending injury in June. Rublev has been pretty consistent this year and he has making the latter stages of tournaments. “My place as world number 5? I'm a little lucky.

It's true that I had a good season, surely my best. But I took advantage of the fact that Rafael Nadal didn't play a lot of tournaments. Dominic Thiem was also injured. Both have lost a lot of points in the standings. I passed them but I was a bit lucky," Rublev said, per We Love Tennis.

Nadal tipped to have a successful comeback

Toni Nadal revealed that Nadal is optimistic about his comeback as he believes the former world No. 1 has two or three good years on the Tour left. "In any case, he is optimistic and I think he will get over this once again.

I am optimistic and my feeling is that 2022 may be a good season for him and that he has 2 or 3 good years left, but as time progresses everything is more complicated," Toni said. Also, Uncle Toni revealed he started believing Nadal could be the greatest player of all time when he completed a Career Grand Slam at the age of 24.

"The truth is that when Rafa emerged, you could see that Roger was going to be one of the best in history. As soon as we saw Novak, we realized that he was special. As for Rafa, it was when he completed the Grand Slam, with 24 years, when I knew that he would fight to be the best in history," Toni said.
