Sergi Bruguera: Rafael Nadal is by far best clay court player in tennis history

Spain Davis Cup team captain Sergi Bruguera revealed he was obsessed about winning the French Open added he was lucky Rafael Nadal wasn't active when he was playing tennis professionally. Bruguera, a former world No. 3, won back-to-back French Open titles in 1993 and 1994.

Nadal, 35, is a record 13-time French Open champion. Bruguera believes that Nadal is by far the best clay court player ever. "My obsession was winning Roland Garros and I was lucky enough to win it twice," Bruguera told Punto de Break.

"Rafa Nadal is by far the best clay court player in history. So on that side I'm glad I didn't have to play him (on clay) while I was professional."

Nadal made an honest admission

Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are all tied on the all-time Grand Slam record list with 20 Majors.

Nadal admits Djokovic is the best positioned to finish with the most Grand Slams. “Right now the best placed player to finish with the most Grand Slam titles is Novak Djokovic. You just have to see where Roger is and where I am, while he is competing and in great shape.

This is the reality from now on. We’ll see what happens in a few months, but right now if there is clearly a favorite, it’s him,” Nadal stated, as quoted on Essentially Sports. Former world No. 1 Jim Courier believes a healthy Nadal would still be a slight favorite over Djokovic at the French Open.

"And for Rafa how he is going to respond, how his foot is going to respond after sitting out a lot this season trying to fix that after it went out on him at Roland Garros. He is still the favorite at Roland Garros. Slighlty, slightly over Novak -- assuming they are both healthy.

And Novak is probably the favorite everywhere else -- certainly at Wimbledon," Courier said during his appearance on Tennis Channel.
