Karolina Pliskova congratulated Ashleigh Barty and Rafael Nadal on winning the Australian Open and said the Spaniard's 21 Grand Slams are an incredible achievement. Barty defeated Danielle Collins in the Australian Open women's singles final to become the first Australian to win it all in Melbourne since 1978.
On Sunday, Nadal pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Daniil Medvedev 2-6 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-4 7-5 and win his second Australian Open title. Nadal also broke the all-time Grand Slam record as he now has 21 Majors in his collection.
"All words are meaningless. Huge congrats to @ashbarty what a performance front of your home crowd! Congratulations to the legend @RafaelNadal for 21st GS. Incredible achievement," Pliskova tweeted.
Nadal pulled off a stunning comeback
Nadal admitted it was probably the biggest comeback of his career.
“If we put everything together, the scenario, the momentum, what it means…yeah, [it’s] probably the biggest comeback of my tennis career,” Nadal said in the press conference. Nadal was down by two sets and facing three consecutive break points in the sixth game of the third game.
Nadal recalled what was going through his head in those moments. “In that moment, of course, the situation was critical,” said Nadal, “but sport is unpredictable. The normal thing is to lose the match in straight sets from that situation.
On the other hand, I had a big chance in the second [set] too. “I was repeating to myself during the whole match, I lost a lot of times here [in Melbourne] having chances, sometimes I was a little bit unlucky. I just wanted to keep believing until the end.
I just wanted to give myself a chance. “That's what I did. Just fight, just keep belief in trying to find a solution. Of course, I was lucky to save that moment. [There were] a lot of moments that can decide the final like this”.
