Toni Nadal: Rafael Nadal was taught to work hard and never complain

Renowned tennis coach Toni Nadal was always about hard work and extreme discipline and that was one of the secrets to Rafael Nadal's enormous success. Uncle Toni took his nephew under his wing from a young age and Rafael became one of the all-time greats.

Uncle Toni and Rafael decided to part ways after the 2017 season but the two still have a great and close relationship. Uncle Toni has been working with Canadian tennis star Felix Auger-Aliassime since last year. "Going back to why Rafa is able to act as he does, my answer is simply: because he got used to it.

My nephew prepared himself, practically during his entire life, to face adversity. For this reason, I was a very demanding coach," Toni wrote for El Pais, according to Gaspar Ribeiro Lanca.

Nadal respected and listened to Uncle Toni

"From my extensive experience, I've seen how frustration, boredom and the immediate abandonment of something that bothers them or does not immediately turn out as they wish have been accentuated in young people," Toni explained.

Nadal has always been known as one of the hardest workers and biggest competitors. "My nephew had the obligation, instilled by me at the beginning, assumed by him later, to not complain, to enter the court every day in good spirits, to accept that things do not go well immediately and to assume the difficulties as much as possible," Toni noted.

"He accepted the demand, absolutely every day of all the years, to enter the court with a good spirit, not break a racket, train longer than expected. But above all to understand & accept that even if we did all this, things would not necessarily turn out well."

Nadal's ultimate fighting spirit landed him a record 21st Grand Slam title this past Sunday. Nadal was down by two sets to Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final but came back to win in five sets.
