Casper Ruud offers assessment of Rafael Nadal's Australian Open victory

Norwegian tennis star Casper Ruud thinks Rafael Nadal's Australian Open victory was one of the "greatest sports achievements in recent history." Nadal, 35, played in just one event in the second half of the 2021 season due to a foot issue.

In mid-December, Nadal admitted he was unsure if he would be able to play in Australia. Nadal ultimately made the decision to fly to Australia and the rest is history as he won back-to-back titles at the Melbourne Summer Set and Australian Open.

Nadal's most impressive win in Australia came in the Australian Open final, in which he recovered from two sets down to beat world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. "Thoughts on Rafa’s win at the Australian Open?" a fan asked Ruud on Twitter.

"One of the greatest sports achievements in recent history," Ruud answered.

Nadal made tennis history

Nadal appeared to be done and on the brink of a straight-set defeat to Medvedev. Medvedev was up by two sets, had a 3-2 lead in the third set and three consecutive break points on Nadal's serve.

Nadal saved those three break points and went on to make a stunning comeback. Nadal now owns a record of 21 Grand Slam titles. “It was one of the most emotional matches of my career,” Nadal said during the trophy ceremony.

“To share the court with Daniil was just an honour. It is amazing. To be honest, one and a half months ago I wasn’t sure if I was able to be back on the Tour playing tennis again. But today I am here in front of all of you with this trophy in front of me.

You are just amazing, thank you so much”. Ruud, who is now a top-10 player and overall one of the best players on the Tour, hasn't yet had a chance to play Nadal.
