Chanda Rubin weighs in on Carlos Alcaraz - Rafael Nadal comparison

Former Grand Slam champion in doubles Chanda Rubin acknowledged being compared to Rafael Nadal says a lot about Carlos Alcaraz but highlighted the 18-year-old is not looking to be the new Nadal. Alcaraz, 18, is having a stunning start to his career and many have been quick to point out the similarity between Alcaraz and Nadal.

Nadal was just 18 years when he became a Grand Slam champion and broke into the top-10. Alcaraz, who will turn 19 next month, is already a Masters champion and a top-10 player as he is enjoying a career-high ranking of No.

9 in the world. "It just felt like a matter of time, especially with how he started the year, what we saw in Indian Wells, taking that same play into Miami, knew that he was shortly going to be into the top-10. It's nice to compare the similarities between these two, but as Alcaraz says, he is his own person, he's not looking to be Nadal part 2 and I think that is very fair and very different players in some ways but it is nice to be compared to one of the all-time greats in Rafa Nadal," Rubin said on Tennis Channel.

Alcaraz not looking to be the new Nadal

The expectation on Alcaraz is massive and he has been tipped by many to win multiple Grand Slams and become the world No. 1 in the future. When asked about the Nadal comparison, Alcaraz said he just wants to be the best possible version of Alcaraz.

"I don’t think at all about being the new Rafa Nadal, or that I have to get to win as much as him. I want to be Carlos Alcaraz, that’s it. Otherwise I would put too much pressure on myself: if you imagine to win 21 Slams, you only hurt yourself," Alcaraz said.

After winning Miami, Alcaraz said he feels mentally and physically ready to win a Grand Slam. It remains to be seen if Alcaraz can win a Grand Slam as a teenager at the French Open.
