Martina Navratilova: Rafael Nadal is Superman, he seems indestructible

Former world No. 1 Martina Navratilova dropped big words about Rafael Nadal, calling him a "Superman" and someone who looks to be "indestructible." Nadal, who will be turned 36 in June, missed almost the entire second half of the 2021 season because of a foot injury.

Nadal wasn't sure whether he would be able to return in Australia but he made the decision to play and the rest is history. After being sidelined for several months, Nadal won the Melbourne Summer Set and lifted a record 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

It was a stunning comeback and one that will always be remembered as one of the greatest in tennis history. During an interview with Heraldo, Navratilova was asked if Nadal could match Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams.

"It may be. He's still playing. We don't know how long it will last because tennis is very demanding, and he has injuries, but he always comes back," Navratilova told Heraldo, as quoted on Sportskeeda. "With a broken rib, and he's back.

He is Superman; he should go with a cloak. He seems indestructible."

Nadal kicked off his clay season in Madrid

After being sidelined for a month and a half because of a rib stress fracture, Nadal finally started his clay season in Madrid.

After a first round bye, Nadal survived tight matches versus Miomir Kecmanovic and Davud Goffin to progress into the quarterfinal. In the quarterfinal, Nadal suffered his first-ever defeat versus Alcaraz as the 19-year-old Spaniard beat the former world No.

1 in three sets. Nadal was seen limping after the match but refused to blame his foot for the loss. "I will not talk about my foot today. I will talk about tennis. Need to be quicker, react better, read the game better," Nadal said.

When asked about what he needs to do better in Rome, Nadal had an answer. "Need to be more dynamic, quicker, hit deeper. I have the right mindset. I have to accept what my main goal," Nadal revealed.
