Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz says he feels sad for Rafael Nadal as he would love to see his idol fully healthy for the French Open. The last few months have been extremely tough for Nadal. In Indian Wells, Nadal sustained a rib stress fracture, which kept him out of action for a month and a half and forced to skip Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
Nadal kicked off his clay season in Madrid but he is still having health issues as he is now plagued by a lingering foot issue. Nadal suffered a shock round-of-16 in Rome and after the match revealed his foot was causing him great pain throughout the match.
"It hurts me to see Nadal suffering playing the sport he loves," Alcaraz told EFE.
Alcaraz sad for Nadal
After losing to Denis Shapovalov in Rome, Nadal opened up about his foot injury like never before.
Nadal noted that his foot is causing him problems in everyday life, not just on a tennis court. “I had my foot again with a lot of pain,” Nadal said. “I am a player living with an injury; it is nothing new.
It's something that is there. Unfortunately my day-by-day is difficult, honestly. it’s difficult for me to accept the situation sometimes. Today at half the second set, it starts and then it wasn't playable for me.
I don't want to take away anything from Denis. Today is for him. Well done for him”. Even though Nadal hasn't had a great clay season and is bothered by a foot issue, many believe he still needs to be considered as a French Open favorite.
However, winning this year's French Open will be especially tough for Nadal because of the emergence of Alcaraz. Alcaraz defeated Nadal en route to winning Madrid and he has underlined that his goal at the French Open is to win his first Grand Slam.
