Rafael Nadal: I'm happy for Iga Swiatek, she is above the rest of the field

Record 21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has called Iga Swiatek "something special" as he is happy to see the Pole thriving on the WTA Tour and establishing herself as a dominant force. Swiatek, 20, showed in 2020 that she was extremely talented as she became a Grand Slam champion as a teenager at the French Open.

Now, Swiatek is ranked at No. 1 in the world and she hasn't lost a match in three months. Swiatek has won her last 28 matches and she is the absolute favorite for the French Open crown. "Today, she's above the rest of the field.

It's something special. i'm happy for her. She's fresh, natural. We were surprised when she won here two years ago, now she's unstoppable. Let's let her play," Nadal said, per Tennis Majors.

Nadal: The is pain is always there

Nadal skipped the beginning of the clay season because of a rib stress fracture.

Nadal kicked off his clay season in Madrid, where he was beaten in the quarterfinal by Carlos Alcaraz. In Rome, Nadal suffered a surprise last-16 loss to Denis Shapovalov. Nadal didn't look comfortable at all versus Shapovalov and it was evident that he was struggling with something.

After the match, Nadal revealed his troublesome foot was causing him big pain. "I mean, the pain is there always, no? It's not about gonna disappear now. It's about if the pain is high and strong enough to allow me to play with real chances or not.

I live every day with that, so is nothing new for me and is not a big surprise," Nadal said.

Nadal is a record 13-time French Open champion and among favorites for this year's title. Nadal didn't win the French Open last year as he was stopped by Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.
