Record 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal dropped praise on Casper Ruud, saying the Norwegian as a title contender at every clay court tournament he plays. On Friday, Nadal was up by a set before Alexander Zverev sustained an ankle injury and was forced to retire their French Open semifinal match.
On the other side, Ruud recovered from a set down to beat Marin Cilic and reach his maiden Grand Slam final. "I'm not surprised by Casper Ruud's level. He's a contender for every clay court tournament he plays," Nadal said, per Tennis Majors.
Nadal will be aiming ro win a record 22nd Grand Slam title when he takes on Ruud in the French Open final.
"Winning is beautiful, it gives you adrenaline, it makes me happy. I'm doing the maximum to give me options whatever the physical shape. Win another title after the pain I had, it would be, waouw," Nadal added.
Ruud looking forward to playing Nadal
Ruud grew up idolizing Nadal but he has never played the Spaniard. On Sunday, that will change and Ruud says it was definitely worth waiting for the right moment to face Nadal. “It is amazing.
He is the last player of the Big 3 and the very top players in the world I have never played against,” Ruud said of Nadal in an on-court interview. “So I guess this is perfect timing and worth the wait. To finally play him in a Grand Slam final will be a special moment for me.
Hopefully a little bit for him as well. He has played so many finals, but at least he is playing a student from his academy this time. So it is going to be a fun one hopefully”. Nadal was doubted before the start of the French Open but now he has been through to his 14th French Open final.
