Roger Federer has not played for over a year, struggling with a knee injury despite three surgeries. Roger should return to action at the next month's Laver Cup, joining forces with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Rafa spoke about Roger ahead of the US Open, praising his great rival and hoping to see him back on the court soon. Nadal and Federer played together for the first time during the first edition of the Laver Cup in Prague 2017.
They faced Jack Sock and Sam Querrey and scored a 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 victory to push Team Europe 9-3 in front. Sock and Querrey had a chance to spoil Federer's and Nadal's party. They faced only one break chance in the entire clash (the one that cost them the opener) and created nine break opportunities, seizing two in the second set.
Both teams found the rhythm on serve early in the opener, delivering six comfortable holds before Sock lost serve at 3-3. Nadal served to confirm the break in game eight, and he and Roger played against four break chances. The legends stayed calm and repelled them to cement the advantage.
Roger served for the opener in game ten and produced a fine hold for 6-4 after 39 minutes, pushing the proud owners of 35 Major titles closer to the finish line.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play together at the Laver Cup.
Suddenly, Roger and Rafa lost their magic in set number two.
Team World raised their level to dominate and force a decider. Sock and Querrey broke Nadal in game four and repeated that with Federer two games later to send the encounter into a deciding match tie break. Like true champions, Federer and Nadal picked up their game again and raced into an 8-1 lead thanks to three mini-breaks.
Ready to fight, the Americans reduced the deficit to 9-5. Nonetheless, that was all we saw from them, as Rafa and Roger claimed the 15th point to seal the deal and celebrate their first and only victory on the same side of the court.
"We are excited to see Roger back on track. I hope he is well enough to be able to play. I have not seen him for a long time, so I hope he can make a comeback in London. What I said before about Serena goes the same for Roger.
The most important thing is that he is healthy and happy. If that's the case, it would be incredible to see him back on the court. We can only thank Roger for everything he has done. I'm confident we will still see more from him. I can not wait to team up with him," Rafael Nadal said.
