Feliciano Lopez on Rafael Nadal: "I can't imagine him playing this year"

Feliciano Lopez is the new director of the 2023 Davis Cup finals, which will take place in November. The tennis player, close to retiring from the tennis Tour, has won the national team competition four times with the flag of Spain.

However, the Spanish cycle does not seem to have come to an end yet: led by Rafael Nadal first, by Carlos Alcaraz now. The former world number one, who has recently turned 37, will not participate in the six finals to be held in Malaga, according to the Spanish tennis player and new tournament director.

Feliciano López, as reported by Eurosport Spain, explained: "It's not me who has to answer. From what I understand, the recovery will be long and I can't imagine him playing this year. I haven't spoken to him, but I'd be surprised if he can already play by the end of this year.

Any captain in the world would like Nadal and Alcaraz in the same team, just as it would be a dream for every Spanish fan."

Nadal's retirement

Rafa Nadal had spoken of a possible return to the final stages of the Davis Cup in that press conference announcing the forfeit at this edition of Roland Garros: the first since 2024 without the winner of 14 titles on French clay.

The same press conference in which he announced his possible retirement from tennis in 2024. Feliciano Lopez said about his countryman: "I knew things weren't going well and that the recovery wasn't going as they expected.

There was a lot of speculation surrounding that press conference. I think everything will be fine for him and Rafa will have the opportunity to say goodbye as he deserves. Playing tennis on a court and playing where he wants to play and certainly at a good level.

There is still plenty of time, it's not that bad and hopefully he will recover to play as soon as possible and say goodbye to tennis in front of those people who are so eager to see him again, even if it's for the last time."
