The final of the Mutua Madrid Open brought joy to the Spanish crowd, as World No.1 Rafael Nadal managed to defend his title in his home country. It wasn't just joy for Nadal however, who down a set and a break, saw his Spanish dream fading under the merciless shots of Kei Nishikori.
After winning the final, many experts talked about how the Japanese - the first from his country to ever break into the top 10 - did indeed deserve the win. Surprisingly joining the chorus of Nishikori's win defenders is Rafael Nadal's uncle and coach Toni, who soon after the final in Madrid revealed: "We didn't deserve the win, our opponent did.
Nishikori played better throughout the entire match. It's an unfair victory, and we have been really lucky. Rafa was very nervous, all because of the great level of Nishikori. The tournament was a very good one, with the exception of the final, but in Rome we will have to be extra careful.
People tend to take Rafa's wins for granted. Only the dull and fanatic people are extra confident. I am neither of that". Follow the author on Twitter at @ivpasqua Download the Tennis World Magazine App for Apple and Android to read all our news!
