Conchita Martinez: 'He's reached Rio with lack of matches, but he's still Rafael Nadal'

Conchita Martinez, the Spanish Davis Cup team captain, spoke about Rafael Nadal's choice to play singles, doubles with Marc Lopez and mixed doubles with Garbine Muguruza at the Olympic Games.

'We took the time we needed to decide, we had to see how the wrist would have reacted.

We analyzed the pros and cons and we understood it was the best thing. We are all very happy, being flagbearer and playing is a great motivation for Rafa, who is a professional from head to toe. He practiced intensely in the morning and afternoon, wrist issues did not increase and so it was easy to decide.

He's short of matches, but he's still Rafa Nadal,' said Martinez.

When asked about his chances of winning medals, Martinez replied, 'No one can think that Rafa will not give his best or that he is not competitive.

He is at a very high level, the situation is not ideal but there are still a few days left.'
