Rafael Nadal defeated Juan Martin del Potro in epic five-set match at Wimbledon. The Spaniard prevailed in five sets, 7-5 6-7(7) 4-6 6-4 6-4 after almost five hours. Nadal showed his fighting spirit and great attitude throughout the meeting, and both played an amazing tennis from beginning to the end.
Nadal advanced into his sixth Wimbledon semifinal. In this tournament, before this year he had last reached the quarter-finals in 2011, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the championship clash. Nadal will now face the Serb Djokovic for the 52th time in career, the Serb leads head to head meetings 26-25.
The Spaniard won the last two meetings, both on clay in the 2017 Madrid and 2018 Rome semifinals. Djokovic last beat Nadal at 2016 Rome, which marked the seventh consecutive win over his rival. The streak had started in 2015 Monte Carlo.
At the All England Club they first faced each other in 2007, when Djokovic during the third set: the Serb had won first set 6-3, Nadal had prevailed in the second set 6-1 and was leading 4-1 in the third. Here below Nadal-del Potro match highlights.
In press conference, Del Potro said: '“I'm playing good tournaments on different surface[s]. Now I'm looking forward to keep playing in this level at the US Open, which is one of my favourite tournaments to play.
I will try to improve a little bit more. If I have chances to play Rafa or the top guys, I would like to be in that level to do a better match than today.'
