Stan Wawrinka: 'The match against Rafael Nadal will be complicated'

Stan Wawrinka saved four match points to beat Marton Fucsovics in three sets, 1-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(10) and book a third round clash against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal on Thursday night. At the end of the match, the Swiss player reflected on his comeback. 'You always need a little bit of luck to win matches like that', he admitted. 'It’s the second time I win after losing the first set. There’s nothing better for my confidence.'

Wawrinka had defeated Kyrgios on Monday 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. He was supposed to start from the qualifying here, but Andy Murray withdrew and so he took his wild card spot. Commenting on his next match against Nadal, who beat Benoit Paire in his opening round, Wawrinka added: 'It’s gonna be complicated. It’s been a long time since I have won back-to-back matches. I don’t know how my body will react.'

Nadal, the top seed, received a first-round bye in Toronto. He played Frenchman Benoit Paire in the second round on Wednesday and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The Spaniard has a 16-3 win-to-loss record against Wawrinka. In their last match, at the 2017 French Open final, Nadal beat Wawrinka in straight sets to win his 10th French Open title.
