In an interview to EFE in Santiago, the world No. 43 Nicolas Jarry commented on his great tennis season. Jarry feels proud and happy. 'Ending up in the top 50 was unbelievable. It was a rollercoaster of emotions this year, it was all first experiences', he said.
This year Jarry played in the Grand Slam main draw for the first time. A few months later, in Wimbledon, he got his first match win in these tournaments level and at the Sao Paulo Open in February he reached his first ATP career-final losing to Fabio Fognini in three sets.
Jarry started the year as world No. 113 and a few weeks ago he got as higher as No. 39, his career-high ranking. Jarry defeated Marin Cilic at the Rolex Shanghai Masters second round, but he believes that his win over Dominic Thiem on clay in Hamburg was the best one.
'After Rafael Nadal, Thiem is the best on clay. It was the most important win of the year.' Chile had some great tennis legends in the past like Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu and is now waiting for the younger players' breakthrough to happen.
Jarry believes there are too many expectations: 'Chileans were lucky to have very good players and believe that being top 50 or 100 on the ATP is normal. For me, this year I reached an unbelievable ranking position.' Thiem will start his 2019 season in Doha, Nadal in Brisbane.
