Toni Nadal: 'Excuses cannot exist in sports'

In a recent interview, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni commented on the keys that led his nephew to have success in his life. The 58-year-old said: "We have our own training method, based on the experience earned over all these years spent on the ATP Tour.

Now we live in a world where giving the fault to others is easy. I made Rafa Nadal get used to the contrary. You have to be responsible for what you do and learn. Other people have no faults, excuses are not worth. The real talent is about the ability to handle things.

Giving yourself more chances. Being willing not to make mistakes and having the desire to learn a bit more. I always made Rafael Nadal feel the necessity to improve. And you have to be confident in what you do. An excuse never made us win a match.

The most important thing is to play every point like if it was a match point. An excuse never made us improve. You need to insist on values of confidence, effort and perseverance. The method in order to triumph in life is to work every day.

You have to shape the character in a proper way to be able to win. Improving makes me passionate and that's what I want to give. You have to give 100 per cent, everything."
