Rafael Nadal had family issues after 2009 loss to Soderling - Uncle Toni

In an interview, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni recalled his nephew's loss to Robin Soderling in the 2009 French Open fourth round. The Swede was the only player who beat Nadal in the Spaniard's career besides Novak Djokovic who did it in 2015.

"A very painful moment, for several reasons then Rafa had family issues. After his win over Lleyton Hewitt in the third round, I remember I saw him disappointed in the hotel because of his knee. He was anxious, but he wanted to play and then the crowd booed him which shocked us, I said that the crowd was stupid.

Soderling was a very good player but then the destiny of the match was mostly on him rather than Rafa", said Toni. Toni also praised the 18-time Grand Slam winner's mentality and humility: "If he disagrees with you, he always tries to speak to you.

When you get to the top, people always tend to say that what you do is great but I wanted to keep saying that I wanted to. There was never a clash between us or between him and another team member, coach or agent. That shows his personality."
