Rome is one of the tournaments the Rafael Nadal's uncle and former coach Toni cannot miss. Even this year the 58-year-old is attending the Italian event. In an exclusive interview with Tennis World USA, the 58-year-old answered the question everyone is asking for.
Is Nadal still the man to beat in the French Open despite some disappointing results? "I do not know, Rafael has not played in a perfect way in Madrid, Monte Carlo or Barcelona, he reached the semifinals and I think here and in Paris, he will play well", Toni said.
"I think he is the favourite with Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem. Roger Federer too, he has won a record 20 Grand Slam titles, it's normal he is one of the contenders, less than Djokovic and Rafael but if he plays well he can beat one of the top guys."
Among the younger players, who will win a Grand Slam first? "Until some time ago I thought Alexander Zverev but he dealt with several issues and in the Majors, he has not played well. But he beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the London ATP Finals, he won in Madrid last year and he has the chance to be the next one.
Anybody can win, there are many who play well: Tsitsipas, Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime... Kyrgios, if he is focused, especially at Wimbledon can make it." And then there is Jaume Munar... "He is good, but he needs to improve more especially in hitting the ball strong on the forehand side.
In the next years, he will be there among the best guys." Time is finished: Toni needs to go watch Munar' match against Albert Ramos on Court No. 2.
