Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem claims he played in the French Open final against world No. 2 Rafael Nadal as well as he played against him in the Barcelona Open final. The Austrian failed to lift his maiden Grand Slam title this past Sunday as the Spaniard won 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1.
Earlier this past clay season, eventual Barcelona champion Thiem defeated Nadal 6-4 6-4 in the Barcelona semifinal. Yet, the 25-year-old failed to beat Nadal when it mattered most as the Spaniard claimed a record 12th French Open title and kept his finals record at the tournament perfect.
"I haven't played worse than in Barcelona, but he rose his level a lot. He wasn't at his best in Barcelona, I know that. But Rafa is an absolute legend, one of the best players of all time, chapeau," Thiem told ORF.at, as revealed by Twitter user De Nela.
According to dad Wolfgang Thiem, the world No. 4 really believed he could win the French Open this year. In the end, Thiem ended up picking back-to-back losses to Nadal in the French Open finals. "Dominic gave the impression that he really believed he can win it this year, that wasn't the same last year. You could really feel how disappointed he was when the match was over," Wolfgang said, per De Nela.
