In an interview the former Brazilian player Rogerio Dutra Silva recalled his 2017 Rogers Cup Montreal loss to Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian would then beat Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal among the others to reach the semifinals.
"I still remember it today. It was worth it. If I had won, I would have achieved my career-high ranking. I was very close to the top 60. For him that was very good and for me very bad. I remember the match point I had... I hit the ball on his feet and he hit a magical volley.
He is a talent. That was a very important win for his career, he changed a lot. To beat Nadal, you have to play at a very high level both physically and mentally for three hours, I do not know how much time. Because of his age, almost no one thought he would be ready for that", said Dutra Silva.
After that match against Nadal, Shapovalov said: "The crowd was ridiculous. I've never been in a sporting event where the fans get so loud. It's so much fun to be a part of. It's so much fun having them cheer me on.
Honestly, I don't think I could be in this position without them." Shapovalov has lost all the last five matches he played on Tour. He is set to be back in action in next week's Montreal Rogers Cup.
