Kyrgios praises Medvedev after loss to Rafael Nadal: 'My favorite player'

Through his official Instagram Stories account Nick Kyrgios praised Daniil Medvedev for his amazing effort following the five-set US Open final loss to Rafael Nadal. "My favorite player", wrote Kyrgios, who often showed in the recent times his admiration for the Russian through social media.

Kyrgios beat Medvedev in last month's Citi Open in Washington final. Greg Rusedski said: “Nadal is loving life right now with number 19. He’s going to be the first one to surpass Federer, no question about it, 21, 22.

I thought Djokovic was going to win here this year. He’s got a lot more work to do but I’m thinking Djokovic and Nadal will both pass Federer. The way Rafa played tonight it’s between those two for the most.

That was just phenomenal”. The former world No. 1 Marat Safin spoke about how it felt like to work as a TV commentator for the final: "I tried to do as much as possible, like I could. The feedback was more positive than negative.

When you are a former professional you perceive everything in a slightly different way and I worked not just as a commentator, but as a fan too. It's clear that everybody has a different perspective but I am what I am. As for the match, Medvedev still needs to improve but he has a great future.

Nadal is more experienced, so that's why Daniil lost even if be could win. It's okay, there will be other great wins. I think Nadal was surprised that the young guy played so well against him. The pressure on the Spaniard increased as he was the favorite.

When a younger player comes out against you, he fights and doesn't give up. I think next year he will become world No. 1 and have a good end to the season."
