Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev may face each other again on Tuesday November 19 starting from 6:00 pm, once again on hard court as Spain and Russia will face each other in the Davis Cup finals in Madrid. Two singles matches will be played and then a doubles.
On Monday the Russians will open their run against Croatia's Marin Cilic and Borna Coric. Nadal and Medvedev played a stunning match in the US Open final on Sunday with the Mallorcan prevailing in five sets. Nadal recently backed the new Davis Cup format.
He is set to be joined on the team by Roberto Bautista Agut, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Verdasco and Pablo Carreno Busta. "I do not like people who criticized Davis Cup without playing it. It's a historical and nice competition and as it did not evolve, it now went through a drastical change."
Russian team will feature Medvedev, Karen Khachanov, Andrey Rublev. In an interview to NY Times Nadal's coach Carlos Moya commented on how the game is changing. Masters 1000s are very balanced and the 23-year-old Medvedev put on a great fight in the US Open final against the Spaniard.
Bianca Andreescu won the women's title. “It’s a different tour, different tennis. It’s very exciting to see new faces coming up in the WTA, and maybe we need that here as well. For the people, it’s good to see new faces.
For us in our team, it’s better that Rafa stays up there, but of course the tour needs exciting new players like Medvedev or the other guys. Sooner or later, they will win Slams", said Moya.
