In an interview to TeleMadrid, the Davis Cup Tournament Director Albert Costa spoke about the new event that will be played in Madrid from 18 to 24 November. Costa said: "It will be a very open event. Many teams have chances to win.
It will be on hard in Madrid at altitude and we do not know who is the favorite. Spain, Serbia and Great Britain will be one of the favorites if they bring Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. Russia can be there too. We will enjoy the best tennis in the world without any doubt."
Specifically, on Rafael Nadal, Costa said: "He did not go to the Asian swing just because he wants to head into the late stage of the season in the best possible way. He will definitely play in Paris, London and Davis Cup.
I met him at his Academy and he is very motivated to play for his country. He has an unbelievable desire to play Davis Cup again and most of all in Madrid." On the criticism around Gerard Pique, Costa added: "You have to thank him for investing in a sport where he doesn't play.
Larry Ellison owns the Indian Wells event, he is a businessman and no one speaks about it." He concluded: "Spanish tennis is very healthy. Manolo Santana was the pioneer, then there was Andres Gimeno, Manuel Orantes, Emilio Sanchez, Sergi Bruguera, Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero, now Nadal. Hopefully, the future keeps being good", said the 2003 French Open champion.
