In an interview to Raw Take the former world No. 1 Marat Safin spoke about the US Open final won by Rafael Nadal over Daniil Medvedev in five sets. Safin, who worked as a TV commentator during that match, said: "He is not old at 33 but the new generation is stepping on his heels.
Players like Medvedev, Khachanov, Thiem, Tsitsipas, Zverev - all these boys are here already! And it's getting harder and harder for Nadal because people have studied his gamestyle. And there is pressure on him because for a veteran player, losing to a younger guy is always painful.
So the combination of factors generates an advantage to the young players, not Nadal. So this makes him nervous as we saw in the match against Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev came back from two sets to love to almost winning the match.
But it's natural, it takes a lot to beat a 33-year-old guy who has been in tennis for 18 years. It's all about experience because a match can be decided by a few points. Medvedev had a chance to break at the beginning of the fifth set but he did not take it.
He had to kill off that game. It's like in football - if you don't score, then you will be scored against. It is the same in all sports. If your opponent feels alive again, you will not stop him", said Safin, who also believes Medvedev argued with the crowd during the tournament because of lack of experience.
