Borna Gojo played an amazing Davis Cup match vs Rafael Nadal, says captain

In a press conference, Croatian Davis Cup team captain Franko Skugor spoke about this year's run. They lost to Spain and Russia. Skugor believes the team, that did not feature Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic due to injuries, will get better.

"We were already involved in situations like this one, in 2016 we reached the final, in 2017 we had injuries, Borna Coric and Marin Cilic were not there, they were not able to play. So in 2018, we reunited and we won the title.

Things were not lucky for us as Coric was extremely tired after the first match and afterwards, he had health issues which forced him to skip the Wednesday action. But there were also positives like Borna Gojo's match, he played an amazing match against Rafael Nadal, the best in the world.

So we have to look at it too because we have a young player who experienced something new." On the new Davis Cup format, Skugor added: "For our team, that may not have so many singles players, it's not that good because the season is long and several players are injured.

So it's not easy. We gave our best. I think none of our players will leave the team although the calendar is a packed one." In an interview to Onda Cero Rafael Nadal's uncle, Toni spoke about the new Davis Cup format.

The 58-year-old Manacor native said: "The environment was similar to the one we had during the previous Davis Cup. There was a lot of excitement. Now only Spain plays in its country while the other 17 need to compete far away.

But the path is a right one. Gerard Pique told me that they are trying to organize it before the ATP Finals, in September or October. He is a smart guy because investing on a sport where you are not involved in, it's not easy.

People are always reluctant to the changes but that was the only solution. In the long term, players will compete because everyone likes playing for their country. Everything has pros and cons. ITF understood it was a good move."

Asked if he was ever asked to become Spain's team captain: "There are better guys than I, and Bruguera is very good."
