Gerard Pique had said before the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid started that he was a bit nervous. The FC Barcelona defender now has different feelings. "Now that it has started, I am much calmer. Now we are starting to see Rafael Nadal and the environment was unbelievable, despite Spain lost the first match", said Pique.
"Of course it's the first year and we have little problems that we will solve as years and days go on, but I am very happy with fans and sponsors' reaction." Is having Nadal a stroke of luck? "Yes, clear, in a competition like Davis Cup we want to have the top players, Rafa is, now he is the number one so having him playing the competition is value addition and also (his) being in Madrid.
The season is very long, Davis Cup is the last tournament of the year and they can play through injuries." Pique got to know the environment of tennis as he attended several major tournaments speaking with players and organizers: "ATP is made up of 50 per cent of players and 50 per cent of tournaments and it makes you share your opinion.
In soccer, there are many authorities, FIFA, UEFA, the Federations, the then clubs and the players are on the bottom and our opinion is little. We sometimes complain about the schedule because it's many matches and the performance level drops."
Jan-Lennard Struff is satisfied with Germany's run: "I'm very happy that we went through. We secured it with four matches in a row. It's amazing. I didn't expect that before getting in here, and I'm very pleased and happy about that. And now, yeah, we see on the TV they're going to play our next opponent."
