Rafael Nadal was special already as a kid, says Granollers

In an interview as quoted by AS Marcel Granollers spoke about his friendship with Rafael Nadal. They have been knowing each other for many years. "We met for the first time in a Spanish championship in Segovia, and both Rafa and I were on the first year", said Granollers.

"He won the tournament and I lost in the semifinals. From there we always played with Spain and we won the sub 14 and 16 year world championship with Tomeu Salva. We had very good moments together. At 11-12 years you already saw that Rafa had something different than others.

He was the best of his group and also of the other groups. He was very strong and he was able to compete with guys who were two years older than him. He was special." Spain's captain Sergi Bruguera added: "It's impressive.

Rafa is a great option for us in doubles if he feels with strength and desire. The good thing about this team is that we can mix up many doubles duos", said Granollers who did not speak with Nadal about possibly playing doubles together at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games."

On the tournament attendance, the director Albert Costa said: "Grounds are not packed all the time. It would be great to have more days, but the ATP calendar is very complicated. For the first year we are very safisfied.

Gerard Pique is also very satisfied but it's clear we have to modify things so that it turns out perfect", said Costa who thinks Spaniards are favorites against Argentina. He also hopes to see a final between Serbia and Spain featuring Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
