John Lickrish, the CEO of event organizers Flash Entertainment, was happy with the way things went at this year's edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. World No. 1 Rafael Nadal claimed his fifth title at the event, while Russia's Maria Sharapova beat Donna Vekic of Croatia in the lone women's match played at the event.
Nadal, 33, edged out Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas in a tense final 6-7 (3) 7-5 7-6 (3) to kick off his preparation for the new season in a perfect way. 16-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, who reached nine finals in 2019, also prepared in Abu Dhabi for the new season.
"After three days of dramatic action on court and family entertainment in the tennis village, the 12th Mubadala World Tennis Championship has reaffirmed its status as a world-class event and underlined Abu Dhabi’s credentials as a truly world-class sporting destination," Lickrish said, per the tournament's website.
"Our fans were entertained, and our players were delighted by the world-renowned hospitality shown to them across Abu Dhabi. Congratulations to our Champion, Rafael Nadal, and Maria Sharapova for her victory on Thursday.
We look forward to welcoming the world’s best players back for another momentous edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in 2020”.
