Rafael Nadal: I don't know why I have only one Australian Open title

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal can't explain why he hasn't won multiple trophies at the Australian Open despite being a five-time finalist at Melbourne Park. Nadal, a 19-time Grand Slam champion, won his maiden Australian Open title in 2009 after beating Swiss Roger Federer in the final.

Since then, the 33-year-old Spaniard has made four more finals at Melbourne Park and lost each of those finals. Nadal, the greatest clay courter ever, has had more success on the hard courts of the US Open -- where he has won four titles.

"I don't know," Nadal said, per the Australian Open website. "I have been break up twice in the fifth set and I lost. Then other times, like 2018, I get injured against Cilic. I went through a couple of things, more than in New York honestly.

But I don't know. Maybe the conditions are better for me in New York than here. That's the only reason that I can find." On Tuesday, top-seeded Nadal handed a straight-set defeat to Hugo Dellien to set up a second round against Federico Delbonis.
