World No. 1 Rafael Nadal successfully passed his second round test at the Australian Open but after the match underlined he needs to lift his level. Nadal, seeded at No. 1, handed a straight-set defeat to world No. 76 Federico Delbonis 6-3 7-6 (4) 6-1 to set up a third round meeting against fellow compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta.
Nadal had break points in four games of the second set but failed to convert and as a result he had to earn the set in a tie-break. Nadal had no problems of creating break point opportunities but he was struggling to convert them as he realized only 3 of his 20 break point chances.
"I think I can do lot of things better,” Nadal said, per the tournament's website. “But is not because of Delbonis, no? I can do things better because of myself. “I need to play better. Especially I need to convert the break points.
“But that's just something that happened today. We don't need to put a lot of attention on this, no? …. I am confident that I’m going to play better because every day in the third set I have been able to show a good level of tennis. I need to do it before the next time."
