In his young career, Dominic Thiem won 16 ATP singles titles and reached the 3rd position of the ATP ranking on 2 March 2020. In the Grand Slam tournaments he reached two finals at Roland Garros and one Australian Open final.
He was also a finalist of the 2019 edition of the ATP Finals in London. His deliberate, yet aggressive playing style, particularly the long take-back on his groundstrokes, ability to sustain long baseline rallies and top-spin serves have greatly benefited his clay game, where he has had the most success (winning ten of his 16 ATP titles on that surface).
He has beaten many great clay-court players on clay, recording four wins over Rafael Nadal on the surface. In an interview with Marca, Toni Nadal was asked if there would be another player like his nephew on clay. "It is difficult for there to be another like Rafael Nadal.
I lived with Bjorn Borg, who was a monster and it seemed incredible to me, but the records are always [there] to be broken. The one who is best positioned is to replace Nadal is Dominic Thiem [because] he adapts to the clay.
Hopefully this year he will not replace Rafael, that will let him win more, but hopefully it will be him" - he said. The Austrian player also won the 2019 Indian Wells Masters and was a finalist at the 2017 and 2018 Madrid Open, semifinalist at the 2017 Italian Open, 2018 Paris Masters and 2019 Madrid Open and a quarterfinalist at the US Open in 2018.
