World No. 2 Rafael Nadal claimed he was happy for Dominic Thiem after the Austrian claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. Thiem, ranked at No. 3 in the world, came back from two sets down to beat German tennis star Alexander Zverev 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (6).
"Happy for Dominic. If somebody deserves to win a big title, it’s him. Super hard worker. Very focused on his goals. Good person. Good human person. He deserved it. Sorry for Sascha," Nadal said, per Ravi Ubha. "He was close but I think in some way even if Sascha played a great final for moments, the road to the final from Dominic has been a little bit more solid.
So in some way he deserved the title and Sascha will have probably more chances in the future."
Nadal uncertain how will it all look at the French Open
Nadal, a record 12-time French Open champion, will be aiming to win his fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros this season.
"I don’t know what the situation is going to look like at Roland Garros. Let’s see how the virus evolves the next couple of weeks. Hopefully in a good way but it doesn’t look like that…We need to be patient and we need to wait about how the situation improves," Nadal said.
Nadal beat Thiem in each of the past two French Open finals. Thiem, who considers clay as his best surface, claimed his maiden Grand Slam title on the hard courts of the US Open. "Yeah, definitely I achieved a life goal, a dream of myself, which I had for many, many years.
Of course, as a kid, as well, when I started to play tennis. But back then it's so far away," Thiem said after winning the US Open. "Then I got closer and closer to the top. At one point I realized that, Wow, maybe one day I can really win one of the four biggest titles in tennis.
"I put a lot of work in. I mean, I dedicated basically my whole life until this point to win one of the four majors. Now I did it. That's also for myself a great accomplishment. "I mean, it's by far not only myself, it's an accomplishment from all my team, from all my family. I guess also today is the day where I gave back huge amount of what they did for me."
