Diego Schwartzman on potentially facing Rafael Nadal: I know this week I can beat him

World No. 14 Diego Schwartzman is full of confidence after besting Dominic Thiem at the French Open as he says he believes this week he can beat world No. 2 Rafael Nadal. Schwartzman, seeded at No. 12, edged out No. 3 seed Thiem 7-6 (1) 5-7 6-7 (6) 7-6 (5) 6-2 to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal.

Schwartzman beat Thiem in the first men's quarterfinal of Tuesday's schedule and he plays next against the winner of the match between Nadal and Jannik Sinner. "I’m not sure because if I see the history, I'm 10-1 down [to Nadal].

I’m not sure if I'm going to have a lot of confidence (laughter). But, yeah, I know this week that I can beat him. That’s important thing," Schwartzman said, per Max Gao. "I know Rafa is the guy who has to win or who is in the best position to win today, and maybe play the semifinal against him.

But I will see the match, just trying to enjoy. I have two days free so I’m not thinking yet about the semifinal." "I have to do a mix every time I’m on court. Being aggressive when I have the chance, having a good defenses when I have to do it.

Today I think was different game. I went many times to the net because Dominic was doing a lot of slice. Was a good move," Schwartzman noted.

Schwartzman believes he will be fine for the potential semifinal against Nadal

Schwartzman edged out back-to-back French Open runner-up Thiem in just over five hours of play.

Earlier in the tournament, Schwartzman claimed four consecutive straight-set wins. "Before this match I was doing a great job winning in 3 sets. That’s why it’s very important to win when you have the opportunity in 3 sets because when is coming the 5 sets, you have to have the fuel tank full.

I think after 2 days I’m going to be perfect in the semifinal," Schwartzman said. The Nadal and Sinner match is scheduled to start late on Tuesday night and Schwartzman is planning to watch it. "For sure I’m going to be awake.

It’s going to be tough to sleep. I’m going to see that match because it's a nice match to watch, very nice match to watch. Sinner is a great guy, great young weapon. Rafa is the legend here, is the owner of this place almost," Schwartzman revealed.
