'Rafael Nadal doesn’t have that advantage', says top coach

Rafael Nadal will try to win the ATP Finals for the first time in his career, one of the great tournaments missing from his personal palmarès. The Spanish champion has been included in the London 2020 Group along with Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev.

“Indoor tournaments? We can find excuses, but the numbers are what they are, ”Nadal explained at a press conference. “In my career I have also played fewer indoor than outdoor tournaments, but it is true that this type of surface does not suit my game.

I hope I can change the numbers this week. Rublev is perhaps the fittest player and certainly the one who has won the most tournaments this year. It will be a very tough start. As for Thiem, we all know what he's capable of.

He is having a great season, as is Tsitsipas, who is the defending champion. It is a very balanced Group, but we are at the ATP Finals and we cannot expect anything different. I hope to be ready since last year I started badly and had abdominal problems.

Even though I won the last two games, the first one has condemned me. In a tournament like this, the first match is very important."

Mouratoglou on Rafael Nadal

Speaking on this issue, tennis expert and coach, Patrick Mouratoglou said, “What makes Rafael Nadal so different and so difficult to beat on other surfaces, he doesn’t have that advantage indoors on hard courts because the bounce is low.

There is a reason why on hardcourts indoors, the bounce is lower than on hardcourts outdoors. The surface is named hardcourts in both cases, but it’s not the same surface at all”. Adding to the earlier statements, he said, “He is a very good competitor now indoors on hard.

There are guys who are still better than him on that surface”. At last year’s ATP Finals, Rafael Nadal lost his very first round-robin match. He did win the other 2 but unfortunately; it was not enough for him to qualify for the semi-finals.

He will try to avoid this mistake this year. “The beginning of the tournament is very important. Last year I started in a very negative way, in fact the rupture of the abdominal made me arrive with less preparation and winning a few games was not enough. I hope to be ready” he said.
