Roger Federer withdrew from the hard court tournament citing a knee injury. Although fans expected him to make it to the US Open, he gave a sad update on the injury. On social media, the Swiss star revealed that he needed knee surgery, which leaves him out for an indefinite period.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is on a roll this year. With three Grand Slam titles, he looks like a favorite to make four of four in 2021. However, he cited shoulder pain and fatigue as his reasons for missing the Cincinnati Open.

Although Nadal played the Citi Open, he withdrew from the National Bank Open citing the need to fully recover for the US Open. The Spaniard skipped Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics due to a foot injury he suffered at the French Open.

Dominic Thiem is another key player who missed the Cincinnati Open. The Austrian faces a race against time to recover from a wrist injury before defending his title at Flushing Meadows. The 22-year-old American cited the need to rest before the US Open as the reason for her retirement.

Marc Rosset firmly believes that Roger Federer has chosen to undergo a third knee surgery to give himself the chance to make one last comeback and retire on his own terms.

Federer's most recent match on tour ended in a lopsided defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon, and many believe the Swiss will be keen to end his career on a better note. The 50-year-old Rosset also reckons Federer has the "will and energy" to keep playing.

"No doubt (that Roger Federer wishes to retire on his own terms which is why he opted for another surgery)," continued Rosset. "But for Roger, we can even add that in his head, he still has the will and energy to want to continue on the circuit.

With, I think, the condition of being able to have more fun and win matches." During a video on Instagram, Federer shared the terrible news with the world. He said, “I’ll be on crutches for many weeks and out of the game for many months. I want to give myself a glimmer of hope of returning to the Tour in some shape or form”.
