Nick Kyrgios included his 2017 Laver Cup defeat against Roger Federer between his top favorite moments from the event, which is set to take place again between September 24th and September 26th. The match recalled by Nick Kyrgios unfolded in the context of Team Europe having the lead over Nick’s Team World (12-9).
It’s also worth mentioning that the Australian missed a match point. “That deciding match against Federer. That was a match to this day that people talk about to me. It was a monumental match and I feel like that really set the tone for any Laver Cup that goes ahead with or without me, or with or without Roger for many years to come.
The energy, the intensity… that, for me, was the definition of what Laver Cup meant,” Kyrgios says in a video released on Laver Cup’s official Instagram account. “To someone like Roger, who has so many accolades, has nothing to prove in this sport, and he’s taking a match that seriously, during the Laver Cup’s first year… obviously, having a match point in that match, and not taking it, was grueling.
It still hurts me to this day. If I’d won that match, would’ve it come down to deciding doubles with me and Jack?” Kyrgios recalls.
Roger Federer’s reaction after winning
After throwing away a match point opportunity, Kyrgios smashed the ball into the net to end the fight, sparking Federer's European colleagues to hop off the bench and celebrate with Roger at the net.
"I was ready to go. I had to be. That is what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday," Federer said. "I was looking at getting ready maybe for doubles at the end...
But I got it done."
